Liz Houghton
FOR THE NEURODIVERGENT MIND
WELCOME
Hello, my name is Liz, and I want to help you with your personalized learning goals.

I possess a passion for life-long learning, sharing knowledge, fostering students’ intellectual, social, and emotional growth. I continually monitor and adapt my tutoring practices in order to address each student’s rate, level and learning style. I have tutored students with ADHD, ASD, Dyslexia, 504 Plans, and students who became anxious with just the mention of math or a spreadsheet. Almost all of my clients are neuro-divergent.
At all levels, I focus on strong mathematical foundations, conceptual understanding, and technical communication. I help students address the undefined gaps in students understanding of foundational knowledge that distance learning and the pandemic left. My goal is to help students increase confidence & study skills, so they can build on it and advocate for their own education now and in the future. I ask about student interests so I could make the curriculum relatable to their life and experiences. Students know how much I can teach them, once they understand how much I care.

My favorite hobbies are paddle boarding, softball, walks on the beach, board games and reading with my children.

SERVICES
Home Instruction

As a home Instructor, I tutor in person and virtually with students 5-20 hours a week in all subjects they are enrolled in through a distance learning or home school program, like BYU Independent Study or K12 Stride.
I partner with students and parents to determine goals and a schedule. Then, I offer additional instruction for difficult lessons, help with assignments, keep students accountable for deadlines, and coaching in study skills/time management.

My goal is to reduce the parental involvement and stress required for students to successfully navigate online curriculum and school requirements.
Course Tutoring
COVID has left many gaps in student's foundational understanding of math that need to be filled in for a successful future. I take the time to teach content both in and out of the course student are enrolled in.
I provide my students the best education possible. For over 14 years, I have tutored one-to-one with students of all ages to improve grades, work within the school system, and gain academic confidence. I help student meet known teacher expectations and focus more on concepts that will be building blocks later in the year or another course. T predominantly work with students in the Lake Oswego and Sherwood School Districts.
My favorites subjects to tutor are Algebra, Pre Calculus, and Calculus: Algebra because it is the foundation for advanced math, and Calculus because engineering (my previous career) is applied calculus.
Entrance Exam Prep

Standardized tests like SAT, ACT, ISEE, & HSPT entrance exams are tricky tests . I tutor students in both, content as well as test specific tips. Students learn test time management, how the tests are set up, learning retention best practices, and stress management.
ADHD Coaching was previously known as Academic Coaching, Teaching Study Skills or Life Coaching. It is a non-judgmental positive partnership to find strategies to help clients achieve their goals.
As an ADHD Coach, I work in person or remotely to help people find processes that work for their brain. I partner with clients and families to determine goals and a schedule. My goal is to reduce the family involvement and stress required for clients to successfully navigate their life by focusing on approach to tasks, accountability and self advocacy, which leads to an increased self esteem.
Additionally, I work with children and adults trying to find successes by forming effective strategies to address challenges and better manage their lives.

I educate clients and families about ADHD and executive functioning and find them related resources.

I also help students with 504 Plans obtain equal access to an education by teaching them to navigate the counseling, accommodations, and customer service departments.

No mater the task, I teach organizational and executive functioning skills they can use for each circumstance we are focusing on and help them understand related requirements and expectations. Often this includes help with: organization, schedules, study skills, turning distracted behaviors into multitasking and integrating movement into learning. Together we find useful tools and resources as well as develop structure, skills, and action plans to tackle any goals or tasks where ADHD symptoms increased difficulty.
